The Norwegian national identity number (ID) is an 11-digit personal identifier. Everyone on the Norwegian National Registry has a national identity number. As a foreigner, you will usually get the D-number – temporary ID number – which becomes your constant ID number when you meet the needed criteria.
But which identification number you receive as a foreign person depends on your residence permit and how long you’re planning to stay in Norway. There are two cases your may be entitled to a D number. In first case, if you intend to stay in Norway for less than 6 months. The second situation is that you intend to stay in Norway for more than 6 months, but do not meet the criteria for being assigned a national identity number.
